Humility is a Key Leadership Trait
Now, we often look for confidence in top management, but do we look for humility, Are they opposites?
I learned something long ago when I read Good to Great. Humility is a super power. Its partner vulnerability is more powerful than any leader counseling. Both is best.
First, what is humility? I find it is knowing who you are and being comfortable with it, so you do not have to prove yourself. You appreciate yourself and do not see yourself as more or less than you are. This makes you able to hear and see the other guy, and they all appreciate that as not common.
To put this another way, you can see your strengths and weaknesses, and thus can empathize with others who like you have strengths and weaknesses.
Humility is a Key and Kendra Scott Knows
Take a look at this quote from Tom Nolan at Kendra Scott at International Business Times.
Your family shapes who you are and what you’re about. It shapes your core belief system. And I think we’ve translated that into the organization into a way where we want to treat people like they are members of our family,
This morphs into recruiting in a big way.
First, let’s consider 18 years growing up in a home 24/7 and how much that impacts who we are.
Kendra can build on that, but rarely can one build from nothing. What can 40 hours a week for 3 years do compared with our childhood?
Because of this, your top management can make you successful if they can build from nothing. Not easy. Most excellent top management will see that they need to hire A players to get to where they want to go. A players can create a great environment that can raise up junior leaders quite a bit.
SHI Group searches out such Leaders as needed. Saying you are humble does not work, so we must go much deeper to dig them out.
