Trust and Verify

trust and verifyTrust and verify is an oft used term. Let’s think about it more though.

Do you have anyone on your team that you need to check continually because you do not trust them? Let them go. Do you have people who you feel uneasy about because you are not sure if they are working for the company or just themselves? Let them go.

Hire people you can trust. They do exist. My customers know that. Once you have someone you can trust for good reason. Trust them.

Check them to see how good they are doing. Check them to motivate them to keep getting priorities completed.

I know a company where his plan was to have two top leaders, so they could compete directly against each other. He planned this way as trusted no one. Madness. Of course, the way he hires on technology and not character is another issue that has put him there.

Trust and Verify and Do It Well

I know others who trust as they do not want to harm the relationship, and then they get run over. They are trusting the wrong people or demotivating good workers by not checking items they asked for. Finally, they think visiting their remote factory for a few days a couple times a year is checking. Trusting and verifying is basic, but it does not get done often enough.

Unfortunately, many managers verify to catch workers doing something wrong. This violates the principle. Like I said above, we must trust and check with a heart to catch workers doing right. That difference in heart position can do a lot to raise the moral of workers. See also Leadership Qualities You Need in Hires.

If your manager has any information that you do not have, then you have no verification.

Do not be held captive by your workers.  There are good people but absent accountability, we all lose motivation. Get good managers to keep every running fast and energized.

In recruiting, we must doubt and verify, so you can rightly trust and verify.

You can have a good and fully transparent team with energy, Take the step.
